On the band’s first album, Pilgrim of the Absolute, Possible Worlds covered Rush’s “Subdivisions,” and while there’s not another Rush song on the Boston band’s second album, The Pelican, there are plenty of Rush sensibilities -- from the short instrumental opener “Genoa & Lucca” to the 19-minute epic “Working Title.” (We can easily imagine Rush going with a song title like that!)
But enough about Rush. Possible Worlds incorporates a variety of influences into its own evolving sound on The Pelican. From the fun rhythmic hand-clapping on “Like a Man” to the jazzy flourishes that punctuate “Hold Back My Hand” to the power-pop tendencies of “Universal,” this record soars. Band mastermind Dan Gioffre took over lead vocals this time, as well as played major instruments, wrote or co-wrote all seven songs and produced the whole thing. Saxophone, flute, oboe, a metal-influenced drummer and some very proggy (and also some very folky) arrangements enhance The Pelican’s appeal.
Take this one for a ride and enjoy the flight.
