Steve Morse Band: Triangulation
It’s been since 2009’s Outstanding in Their Field that fans have waited to hear new music from guitarist extraordinaire Steve Morse and his mates Dave LaRue (Bass) and Van Romaine (Drums). The band’s new release Triangulation is full of high-energy virtuoso musicianship, and Steve’s signature creamy tone lights up these nine new songs. Fans received an early taste with the pre-release of the album opener “Break Through” and “Texus” (featuring Eric Johnson), both tracks left no doubt we were in for a treat.
If you’ve listened to Morse throughout his career, he delivers great melodic songs. The music often features both Morse and LaRue sharing lead duties, their parts seamlessly weaving together in every song. “The Unexpected” is a perfect example, it’s guitar orchestration with all the various parts, and LaRue is essential to the impact of this song. “Tumeni Partz” is one of my favorite tracks, I love the energy, a sequel to “Tumeni Notes” from Steve’s 1989 solo album High Tension Wires. The title track features Dream Theater guitarist John Petrucci, heavy, driving, and with stunning lead work, one of the album’s best. The touching “Taken by an Angel” closes the album as a tribute to Steve’s late wife Janine, and features his son Kevin Morse on guitar.
The Steve Morse Band finished a short tour prior to the album’s release; they were all in fine form. We can only assume they’ll get back out there for more dates in support of Triangulation.
