Faro is an Italian progressive rock band having formed in 2007. The duo consists of Rocco De Simone (vocals and keyboards) and Angelo Troiano (guitars, bass, and keyboards) with special guests: Giacomo Pasquali (bass) and Andrea Giovannoli (drums). The band’s alternative/prog approach is steeped in atmosphere and cinematic touches that envelope these ten tracks in a certain moodiness that is almost palpable. Nu-Man is there most recent album and was released in 2024.
Although the songs kind of blend into each other and this is a fairly long album, the melodies and songcraft is never in question. The band is especially good at creating moodscapes and layered textures using guitar and keyboards. Another plus are the lead vocals which add a new romantic vibe and are very smooth yet still having emotional depth. Special mention must also go to Giovannoli’s drum work as he has a great tone and can let it rip without overpowering the song. It’s all quite subtle yet captivating as the music builds from quiet interludes to heavier riffs, morphing into metallic and alternative realms. For me highlights include the exceptional art rock of “Crystal Cage”, the moody spaciness in the excellent “Paradox”, and “Inside” where melodic guitar work and exceptional drumming add dynamics to its proggy moodscape. The album ending “Touch” offers a beautifully melancholic soundscape with sublime vocals and interesting electronic elements.
Faro has been a new find for me and I am very impressed with Nu-Man. If bands like Anathema, Riverside, Katatonia, and Kingcrow float your boat I suggest you give this one a spin. Easily recommended.
