Truce>3 was recorded live over two days full of raw improvisation. The opening “Not Alone” starts slow as fretless bassist Fabio Trentini locks in with drummer Asaf Sirkis to lay down the main riff. Reuter cuts through the mix nicely, whether laying on top with heavily sustained notes, or shredding like in “Crooked” or “Bond” as good examples. The guitar is also used for atmosphere during the opening section of “We Have Your Back” before it takes on a noisier role. Trentini sounds great on these recordings, his bass playing is very present in the mix, and he’s got a good tone, check out “It’s Not in the Cards”. I do hear the Fripp influence, but I think that is well known from Reuter’s work over the years.
You definitely get to hear some ripping guitar; overall, the music finds a groove and stays with it. I’ll admit that I enjoyed a lot of the playing here, but I find myself tiring of the repetition underneath the lead work. Guitar enthusiasts may feel different!
