The Old Dead Tree: London Sessions EP

French dark progressive band The Old Dead Tree has recently released a four-track EP, titled London Sessions. Recorded in 2024, prior to the release of their recent full-length album Second Thoughts (2024), this is a short but quality release that contains two new tracks and two tracks from 2016’s The Perpetual Motion album, re-recorded.

From the band's perspective, I’m not surprised that they took up an opportunity to record in the iconic Abbey Road Studios, and from a fans perspective, the EP captures the band sounding pristine and energised by the opportunity to record in the iconic rooms. There is no doubt that the band sounds great; inspired by the chance to follow in the footsteps of so many iconic acts before them recording in the iconic white building, adjacent to the crosswalk made famous by the Beatles album cover.

Stylistically, The Old Dead Tree reminds me very much of countrymen Klone. They play a dark progressive rock, with hints of metal, and shades of a gothic, melancholy. It's classy musicianship without frills or overt virtuosic playing. The vocals are classy and restrained. Klone aside, the other obvious comparison is a band like Katatonia.

EP’s are often overlooked by people hunting out new music and new bands. Despite this, I hope plenty of people give this EP a shot. It's an enjoyable release, capturing a band in form.
