Sowulo: Niht
Every now and then, I step out of my comfort zone and stumble into something that takes me by surprise. Niht, the new album by Dutch ensemble Sowulo, is one of those cases. Rooted in Nordic pagan and folk traditions, the album blends ritualistic percussion, haunting choral passages, and ancient instrumentation to create a deeply atmospheric and cinematic experience.
Although sung entirely in Old Norse, and therefore not immediately accessible for most listeners, the emotional charge behind each track feels universal. There’s power in the chants, melancholy in the flutes, and a sort of spiritual calm in the way the rhythms unfold… more like a ceremony than a conventional album.
I’ll admit that this kind of music is a bit out of my usual listening range, but the musicianship and intention here are undeniable. The production is stunning, organic, and immersive, so much that you can almost feel the fog, the forest, and the fire that inspired it.
Niht might not be a record I’ll revisit often, but it’s one I deeply respect. It’s atmospheric art that transcends language, culture, and genre… an album that reminds us how music can still feel ancient, human, and alive… cheers!
