C.I.A Hippie Mind Control: Dust

Dust is the new EP from psychedelic death doom act C.I.A Hippie Mind Control.

Wild band name? check. Wild music, also check.

Dust is a 6-part journey of sorts that meanders through a mix of moods and genres, with extreme metal, doom, prog and psych all in the mix. In a lot of ways this EP sounds like a bunch of musician mates jamming on some cool riff ideas whilst indulging in some sort of psychedelic trip. Although jammy in sections, there are equally plenty of parts that feel very deliberate and composed. There is that dichotomy across a lot of the elements, too. For example, the production is relatively raw, which gives it a slight DiY vibe, although the arrangement and playing is far from amateur. Overall, to paint a picture of this EP, think Crimson by Edge of Sanity, but composed by Stoners who equally enjoy Cathedral's seminal work, early Amorphis, and Dark Side of the Moon!

The EP is rounded out with some covers; "Rainbow Connection" (Paul Williams), "Music is Worth Living For" (Andrew WK) and "Dee" (Randy Rhoads). All 3 covers are quite enjoyable and are a lighter way to finish what is otherwise a dense and heavy release.

The EP is great for what it is. I won’t forget the name C.I.A Hippie Mind Control any time soon, and certainly look forward to seeing what they release next.
