Hedvig Mollestad Trio: Bees in the Bonnet

It’s always interesting what you get out of the basic trio of Guitar, bass, and drums. Distorted guitar and an intense rhythm section drive this bold instrumental album with a stoner / industrial / psychedelic vibe. “See See Bop” has a cool opening riff/chord sequence, and Mollestad gets some noisy ripping guitar going over the top of the track. “Golden Griffen” has another great opening riff, and the intensity of the opener continues here. There are times when I hear bits of King Crimson influence, especially during “Itta”. The closer “Apocalypse Slow” pummels the listener with relentless riffing, while the experimental noise-laden “Bob’s Your Giddy Aunt” doesn’t really get off the ground. “Lamament” provides a sonic change for the listener with its atmospheric guitar, and what sounds like an upright bass, and brushes on the drums for a jazzy feel.

I enjoy the rawness and intensity; there is some serious firepower in the music. I would like to hear Mollestad lay into these songs with more lead work, as it can get overly repetitive. Overall, I appreciate the power of the music.
