Asymmetric Universe: A Memory And What Came After
Stunning, musicianship featuring contrasting styles from aggressive crushing metal (“Fair Enough”) to beautiful melodic piano sequences (“Those Who Stay”). They waste no time as the opening track “Coquelicot” gives you an example of what’s in store. The contrast in styles makes for an extremely interesting, challenging, and ultimately rewarding experience. Yes, it’s heavy, but the songs are very well written and tuneful. A jazzy side can be found mixed into some tracks, but stands out on “Opaco”, showing virtuosity and range. The transitions are seamless, and I’ll find myself questioning how the music got from point A to point B (in a good way). The addition of strings (violin, viola, cello) along with sax on “Reaction-Overthrow” (and elsewhere) is terrific, the perfect example of how well they incorporate various styles and dynamics. The track ends with a beautiful atmospheric piano that transitions into the next song.
This is the kind of music that takes the wind out of you, the intensity and endurance it must take are impressive. It’s an exhausting listen; I mean that in a positive way (if that makes sense). I am blown away by the talent, and equally impressed with the songwriting. Even if this isn’t your cup of tea, it’s certainly an experience to hear musicians this impressive.
