Draper, Terry: Infinity

If you are a klaatu fan like me you know the name Terry Draper. The former Klaatu band member and writer of their most famous song “Calling Occupants” sadly passed away in May of this year at the age of 73 (RIP). I have been a klaatu fan since the beginning and in recent years have been discovering Draper’s solo works, and I have to say I have enjoyed them immensely. It’s weird writing this review knowing Draper’s tuneful grace has left the planet but taking solace in the vast artistic statement he left his fans. So here we are with his last musical statement, the album Infinity and its fifteen tracks spread over sixty minutes of pure joy.

Besides lead vocals Terry plays a variety of instruments including piano, keyboards, drums, percussion and more and has the help from a number of guitarists including Fernando Perdomo, Bill Nadeau, Jamie Hoover and Tommy Solo. His former Klaatu bandmate Dee Long also appears on one track.

Infinity is chalk full of exquisitely written and performed pop/rock music that Draper is known for. The songs span decades, written as far back as 1973. The title track begins the album with a gentle ambience developing into a floaty-dreamy psychedelic pop tune with a slight Beatles influence. An uplifting melody defines “Dance The Dance” featuring nice guitar work from Tommy Solo and the occasional proggy twist. “Brother Of Mine” and “I Close My Eyes” are finely crafted tender ballads with Draper’s patented poignancy and sweeping orchestrations. “Leavin’ Day” has a larger than life bass sound with the guitars a little heavier while “(How Do You) Make Love Stay”, going all the way back to 1980, is an excellent pop tune with smooth and melodic saxophone offering more catchy moments. On “Last Chance To Disappear”, another gem from 1980, a madrigal keyboard arrangement and excellent lead vocals makes for another tasty pop rock tune.

The disc ends with “The Sea” written in 1973 and recorded in 2021. Crashing waves lead into electronic effects, keyboards and soaring lead guitar. It all makes for a lovely slice of progressive pop music and an optimistic end to the album.

It is hard to believe this is the last new music of Draper’s we will get to listen to. The world lost a tremendous talent and more importantly, from all accounts, a tremendous human being. He will be greatly missed.

A Tery Draper Records release in conjunction with MVD Entertainment Group.
