Myth Of Logic: Surrounded By Ghosts
Myth Of Logic is the brainchild of Florida musician Scott G. Davis who for many years wanted to make a progressive rock album showcasing his creativity and artistic skills. Finally in 2022 his work came to fruition with the release of his debut titled Surrounded By Ghosts, the first in his Here and There trilogy. The way I hear it, this album is a shout out to past greats like ELP, Genesis, Yes, Kansas, and others, his influences are displayed for all to hear. Many people who go on about the lack of ingenuity, and yes, this has all been done before, but for me, that does not make this or any other album any less enjoyable.
The concept seems to be part fantasy and part time travel as our protagonist finds himself trapped with seemingly no means of escape. He fights his enemies and whether real or imagined, ghosts and spirits, he does not seem to rid himself of his torment. I need to invest more time in the storyline to completely grasp the situation but one thing is obvious, much thought and effort went into the concept.
The disc begins with the pretty and pastoral “Here” with its dreamy lead vocals and thought provoking guitar arpeggios. The atmosphere is quite gripping as the song goes forward, subtlety building, but never completely breaking out of its easy flowing gentleness. Huge slabs of Keith Emerson like organ and blasts of synths highlight the more frenetic “The Stone House”. His keyboard work here is excellent as the music climbs through gentle mellowness and classis sounding progressive rock where the synthesizers and keyboards are dominant. With “Born To The Sky” there is an '80s Yes feel, very catchy and melodic with soaring vocals and harmonies that should hook anyone who takes the time to listen. Davis’s vocals really come together in this one. The Kansas-Yes inspired “Hollow Body” is another earworm and more classic, proggy rock can be heard in the catchy “Scars Lament” but really, throughout the album the guitar and keys work together naturally, creating many pleasant melodies and excellent solos to latch onto.
Surrounded By Ghosts is a very impressive debut as Davis is uber talented and has a knack for melody that is hard to ignore. Watch this space for his second album coming soon.
