Tre Spiritus: Tre Spiritus

When Rikki Davenport, the drummer and percussionist for OVRFWRD, sent me the files for the debut album of a new band he’s playing in, I wondered: Does this mean that’s it for OVRFWRD? Very happily, he said no, that OVRFWRD is still a going concern, with possibly a new album appearing next year. Thank goodness! Because OVRFWRD has become perhaps my favorite active instrumental rock band over the last several years.

So, now we have another group featuring Davenport, a trio called Tre Spiritus. Joining him are Dig on bass and keyboards and Par Ljungstrom on guitars. There were two things that I immediately noticed that distinguish this album from OVRWFRD’s output: there are no epic or near epic-length songs, and the music is much less heavy. All the compositions are in the three- to five-minute range and I would describe the music as almost playful jazz. At times I was reminded of The Police if they had omitted the vocals and had a greater keyboard presence. But the music also has some funky moments that really groove, on “Memfis,� for instance. And there are some moments that feel introspective and slightly solemn, such as “Soaked.�

This is a very enjoyable album that I have found can be appreciated through both what might be called “active� and “passive� listening. It will be released exclusively digitally, at least for now, on Halloween. The first two tracks are available on Bandcamp now. Check them out!
