Connect The Circle: Wolf In The Sky
Norwegian progressive metallers, Connect The Sky, release their fourth studio album, Wolf In The Sky, a conceptual delivery that promises to return the band to the heights of their critically acclaimed debut This Is Madness, from 2020.
Wolf in the Sky begins with a beautiful strings-driven intro, immediately setting a cinematic tone before giving way to explosions that shatter the serenity. From there, the acoustic guitar steps in to open the first part of the title track, and the listener knows they’re in for something different. The vocals quickly establish themselves as a defining feature; operatic and bombastic, carrying that grand progressive metal flair.
“A Sun Without Brightness” introduces the first true metallic riffs of the album, heavy, brooding, and perfectly supported by standout drumming that elevates the music to a new level. On the other side of the spectrum, “Sacrifice” reveals the band’s more melodic and almost commercial side, with haunting keyboards adding cool layers that mesh beautifully with the guitars.
The conceptual storytelling flows onward with “Never Ending Winter,” a straightforward rocker that still makes room for their progressive leanings. A slow-burning guitar solo morphs seamlessly into a doom metal atmosphere before handing off to “Plague,” an outlier in both tempo and melodic character, but an intriguing one nonetheless.
“On the Run” is a personal highlight, urgent, driven, and full of the kind of guitar work that reminds me exactly why I fell in love with metal in the first place. But the peak of the album comes in its finale: Part II of the title track and the closer, “Hundred Years of Silence.” Both are heavy, doomy, melodic, and masterfully crafted. The hypnotic piano and cello opening of “Hundred Years of Silence” in particular is impossible not to latch onto, pulling the listener in for one last breathtaking ride.
Wolf in the Sky is a unique record, one that blends progressive ambition, metal weight, and classical elegance with real intention. Connect The Circle proves they’re not just carving out a sound of their own but that they're doing it in a way that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with their peers. A great listen, and one I’ll gladly revisit. Cheers!
