Laguna: The Ghost of Katrina

Laguna may hail from Mexico, but The Ghost of Katrina doesn’t sound like a Mexican band at all. Instead, it feels like a young group straight out of Sweden or Finland, paying homage to the classic hard FM/AOR sound of the early 80s, sprinkled with touches of mid-80s hair metal and even a bit of that old Scandinavian heavy metal bite.

The recipe is all there, drilling guitars, smartly placed keyboards, pleasant vocals, a precise rhythm section, and melodies that stick. From the moment the catchy chorus of the opener track, "Ghost Behind The Mask" hits, you know you’re stepping into a melodic ride, and when those Sambora-style guitar effects drop in, it becomes even clearer where Laguna’s compass is pointing.

Sure, bands like H.E.A.T. and One Desire are natural points of comparison, and that’s obvious in tracks like "Living On The Line", "Electric High", and the standout "My Syndrome". But for me, what really lingers is the early Bon Jovi vibe. You can hear it in the verses, in the bridges, in the keyboard lines, even in the lyric choices of songs like "Punk Boy", "Wildfire", and "These Chains". It’s not hidden, and not unwelcome either, just part of the band’s DNA.

Vocalist Andrés Espada deserves a special mention. His high-pitched delivery really pops, especially on the faster songs like "Electric High', and it instantly recalls the glory days of classic heavy metal singers. One can only hope he takes care of that instrument, because it’s a powerful asset for Laguna’s future.

Closing cuts like "Bring Back To Life" and "Sinners Of Tomorrow" add an anthemic punch as the album wraps up just shy of the 40-minute mark, making it an easy and enjoyable listen. Nothing groundbreaking here, and probably not the next big sensation in the genre, but Laguna have put themselves firmly on the map. The Ghost of Katrina is a nostalgic yet energetic record that will resonate with fans who crave that old-school melodic rock feel. Cheers!
