The Ossuary: Requiem For the Sun

Sometimes you just need that little Black Sabbath itch to scratch, and Italy's The Ossuary certainly brings that on their fourth album release, Requiem For the Sun. This is my first exposure to the band, and I'm really intrigued to hear more after diving into this 8-song set of melodic occult doom.

"Altar in Black" sets the tone for the album, big riffs that Tony Iommi would be proud of, and this guy's tone sounds like Tony's in more recent years. Vocals are like a cross between Ozzy and Papa Emeritus from Ghost, very nicely done. Very cool guitar soloing, as well. "Far From the Tree" is a terrific track, the riff is a total headbanger, and the song contains a memorable, haunting chorus and some scorching lead guitar. One of my favorites here! Next up is "Wishing Well", a slower track, with a grinding riff, floating, more psych styled vocals, but still quite melodic...a solid slow doom piece, and also featuring some scalding wah-wah lead guitar! Speaking of wah-wah, "The Others" contains a wicked wah-wah riff to start off the song, and it's quite evil-sounding. This one's a crusher, and there are more of those haunting vocals drenched in reverb...this is a massive doom track, so heavy, so atmospheric and evil! The title track, "Requiem for the Sun" starts off with a pummeling riff and majestic guitar solos followed by big drum fills...another amazing headbanger. I love the title "The Volume of Void", as things drop back to a crawl, this one is an ominous, drifting slice of atmospheric doom, but again, so melodic with enchanting melodies, floating psychedelic vocals...almost like a second cousin to Planet Caravan. Love it. "Eloise" is the 8+ minute closer, more atmosphere, more psychedelic elements, but it's still doomy, with some enormous moments of heavy riffing and dreamy vocals. A very cool way to end the album.

All in all, a VERY good album, that dips into the Sabbath style but doesn't overdo it, adding plenty of haunting atmosphere and psychedelic overtones. Well done!
