Double Vision: Double Vision
Approaching Double Vision’s debut without knowing their past as a Foreigner tribute band might change the way one hears it. Once you do, however, there’s no denying that shadow, though to their credit, the band makes a strong case for their own identity within the AOR and melodic hard rock tradition.
Chandler Mogel’s vocals are warm, welcoming, and perfectly suited for this style. He carries the melodies with confidence and gives the songs their essential lift. The rhythm section of bassist Scott Metaxas and drummer Scott Duboys is as tight as expected, providing that steady backbone that AOR and hard rock thrive on. Meanwhile, the twin guitars of Paul Baccash and Chris Schwartz stick firmly to the script, keeping riffs sharp and solos tasteful, never overindulging but always in service of the song.
The album doesn’t necessarily have that one instant-classic anthem, but it does deliver a solid set of consistently enjoyable tracks. “Prison of Illusion” is a strong opener, setting the tone with energy and precision. “I Know The Way” and “Once Before” showcase the band’s knack for catchy hooks, while “Silence Is Louder” and “This Day and Age” add depth with well-balanced instrumentation. “Youphoria” is perhaps the most infectious of the lot, with an earworm chorus that lingers well after the listen.
At the end of the day, Double Vision feels like an ode: an ode to a great era in accessible rock music, to one of the greatest bands in Foreigner, and to the genre as a whole. While it may not reinvent AOR, it proves that when done with taste and conviction, this music still has plenty of life left in it. A solid debut, and hopefully just the beginning of their story… cheers!
