Talc: III
Talc is an instrumental progressive rock trio based out of Lausanne, Switzerland. The band formed in 2009 and has thus far released three albums - Talc (2013), 2 (2020), and III (2025). Their third album is the first I have heard so let us dig right in.
The music falls under the progressive rock umbrella but touches on a multitude of styles like space rock, psych, electronic, fusion, and post-rock. The players are consummate musicians as the playing is exemplary. This is a true cosmic ride as each track is designated as a star, from the massive Betelgeuse to the red supergiant Antares. So get your rocket ship ready for your journey to the stars " first stop “Mesarthim”. Located in the northern constellation Aries, the music begins with tight and heavy guitar riffs and spacey synths. It is all very textural and atmospheric, especially the trippy softer section. The guitar solo is truly mind bending, as the band explore heavy prog rock, space, and fusion. The massive “Betelgeuse” is next led by textured and atmospheric guitar as well as heavier metallic riffage. It is a very cool sound with a mix of light and heavy and a huge amount of spacey trippiness and scintillating musicianship. “Antares” features weaving guitar exploits with a nod to psychedelic and space rock, the trippy jams had me completely engrossed. Another excellent track with phenomenal guitar work. With “Aldebaran” the band weave darker synth textures and heavier riffs creating some of most intense moments on the disc. There are two more stops for you to take in, both worthy of your time.
The band’s multi-genre approach works remarkably well and should keep even the most seasoned prog head on his or her toes. As such, III is easily recommended for fans of instrumental progressive music.
A Musea Records’ release.
