Violence Dimension is the seventh studio album from British doom/stoner/sludge stalwarts Conan, and comes three years after their last release Evidence of Immortality. They have also severed a long-standing relationship with Napalm Records, and now find themselves signed to Heavy Psych Sounds Records, which, honestly, if a perfect home for them. Clocking in just shy of an hour, Violence Dimension kicks off with those trademark bottom-heavy riffs on "Foeman's Flesh", a lethal, crushing album opener that has some serious heft to it. "Desolation Hexx" continues with the onslaught of fuzz, Jon Davis' massive riffing and anguished vocals creating a wall of sound with the pulverizing rhythms of drummerJohnny King & bassist David Ryley adding to the serious weight of the arrangement. Things take on a faster pace with the frantic "Total Bicep", then slow to a doom-laden funeral dirge with the massive title track. The closing epic "Ocean of Boiling Skin" shows why Conan is so good at what they do, as monstrous waves of fuzz-soaked guitar and bass riffs just pulverize the listener as Davis' agonized vocals drip over the top of it all. This is heavy, heavy stuff, folks, and if this winds up being your first dive into the music of Conan, it's a great place to start before you ultimately work your way backwards.Â
Oh, and great cover art as usual!
