Arcadea: The Exodus of Gravity
Arcadea's 2025 album, The Exodus of Gravity, is a synth-heavy follow-up to their debut from eight years ago. Brann Dailor of Mastodon on drums and vocals, Core Atoms on synths and textures, and new member João Nogueira on synths come together to create a sound defined by cascading layers of keyboards.
The album tells a sci-fi story set on a planet called New Arcadea, where gravity fades and machines awaken to emotion, serving as a vivid metaphor for evolution and the collapse of fixed order giving way to connection and feeling. With tracks like "Dark Star", which sets a tone of cosmic groove and pulsating rhythm, "Fuzzy Planet", a synth-driven burst of euphoric energy, and "Lake of Rust", a darker and more dramatic track that explodes into synth-pop/metal hybrid, Arcadea delivers a cosmic, emotional, and dramatic narrative driven by synths, powerful drumming, and cinematic momentum. "The Hand That Holds the Milky Way" stands out with its strings and powerhouse drumming, lifting the emotional core of the story into a dramatic peak. While the absence of guitars is noticeable, the keyboards and synths fill every corner with danceable grooves and bursts of melody.
This album may not be for everyone, especially those who prefer guitar-driven music, but for those who enjoy narrative ambition, electronic exploration, and sci-fi storylines with real musicianship, The Exodus of Gravity has a niche to shine in. It's a bold, imaginative, and well-crafted album that's worth checking out, showcasing the imagination and craft that Arcadea is capable of... cheers!
