Chronojazz: Interplanetary Funk (feat. Jimmy Haslip)
An excellent fusion trio with impressive pedigrees displaying a heavy Holdsworth influence. The trio consists of renowned bassist Jimmy Haslip (Yellowjackets, Allan Holdsworth, Oz Noy) drummer Ollie Usiskin (has recorded with Mike Stern, Antoine Fafard) and guitarist Ross Ian Lardner, who composed and produced the album.
These guys generate a big sound, expansive chorused guitar chords, a nuanced rhythm section that flex their muscles at the right time, and fluid legato guitar solos. Thankfully, no time is wasted as the opener “1.16.31” gets right to the point, cool composition, great playing and a killer guitar solo. “Inside Mirrors” has one of my favorite solos, the band seamlessly switch gears for that solo section. I love how easily they transition into something completely different. Haslip and Usiskin lock in tight for “Interplanetary Groove”, and Lardner goes off. “Onto.” is another standout featuring angular guitar chords, and an amazing solo. “Pendergast” has a nice intro from Haslip, he and Usiskin lay down a monster groove for Lardner to shred over. A fairly short album, 8 tracks with the longest clocking in at just over 5, makes it easy to absorb and take for multiple spins. Well-written tuneful songs and terrific playing, that’s all you need to know! Holdsworth fans need to check this out.
