Green King: Hidden Beyond Time

Our next stop is Finland and the heavy classic/stoner metal band Green King with their 2022 full length debut titled Hidden Beyond Time. Although short, only thirty-four minutes, the band are able to explore some different styles, from classic heavy metal to a more modern doom sound. Playing on these eight tracks are:

Eliel Salomaa (guitars, vocals)
Lauri Lyytinen (guitars)
Heikki Nyman (bass)
Otto Bigler (drums)

Get ready to settle in and enjoy the ride with the blistering pace set by the album’s first track “Gates Of Annihilation”, recalling the NWoBHM era with its ultra-fast riffage and gritty yet melodic lead vocals. The guitar is clean and robust with just the right amount of firepower. “Godkiller” is another melodic burner where the galloping riffs recall Iron Maiden and the lead vocals of Salomaa really push it to the max. The slower section offers a nice reprieve from the song’s blistering pace and an excellent guitar solo ensues. The short “Prelude To Massacre” goes for a trippy atmospheric soundscape with spoken word vocals that work quite well in the slightly cosmic setting. The slower guitar riffage in “Steel On Ice” brings a doomy element to the band’s fiery dynamics while “Taunter’s Theme” exhibits the band’s folky/minimalist side. Now it is back to heavy as thick slabs of intense guitar highlight the relentless “Tervakiituri” and with “Where Speedian Dwells” the intensity continues with more guitar led classic sounding metal.

Hidden Beyond Time is short and to the point, an old school metal album that is a lot of fun and the more you listen the better it gets. In a word - excellent!
