Jee & Bee is guitarist Bernard Margarit and his wife, sitarist Joyeeta Sanyal, and Fifth Element is a five-song, 23-minute EP on which the couple explores the joys of (mostly) instrumental world music. It’s packed with repetitive rhythms, melodies and emotions, and it will mesmerize you.
The main highlight is “Ganesha Mantra,” an upbeat tribute to the beloved elephant-headed Hindu god of wisdom, new beginnings and luck, and it features Margarit’s daughter, Tanita, on spirited vocals. She returns for the closing title track, too. Meanwhile, Fred Martin (who wrote the title track) handles all keyboards and programming, masterfully backing Jee & Bee without stealing the spotlight.
There’s a proggy-pop vibe to these songs, which are anchored by a world beat vibe and a deep respect for global sounds. Plus, the whole EP will no doubt simply make you feel better.
