Jakszyk, Jakko M.: Son of Glen
Jakko M. Jakszyk is best known his stint as the lead singer and guitarist as the lead singer of King Crimson. Being honest, there is absolutely no King Crimson in my collection. No real reason for this, there just isn’t. In his YouTube review Pete Pardo described Son of Glen as ‘mellow’ and he’s not wrong at all. He also mentioned the great guitars and atmosphere again without straying into wrongness.
Taken as a companion piece to Jakszyk’s book ‘Who’s the Boy With the Lovely Hair?’ Son of Glen is not full of belly laughs given the themes of family, searching, loss, expectations and how they can remain unfulfilled. What there is though is a superbly played and produced album in which the listener can get lost, I suspect though only if said listener gives the album their full attention. This is not an album to pop on while you clean the sideboard.
Jakszyk isn’t afraid of tackling big personal themes such as secrets, parenthood and being someone’s son. For example, “How Did I Let You Get So Old” has the following lyric.
Blood as thin as water finds this allegory undone
For if you are not my father
Then I am not your son
And what displayed itself as anger
Suppressed the anger in our lungs
And left us sharing the frustration
Of an ineffectual tongue
That said, this album is so laid back as to be almost horizontal and at times ("This Kiss Never Lies" and "I Told You So") flirts with Toto style commerciality-not that Toto have been a genuine commercial entity for over thirty plus years! An unexpected surprise.
