DerHerold: Arcanum I - Rage
DerHerold is a German metal project led by guitarist, writer, and arranger Olav Däumling and have released their debut album titled Arcanum I - Rage, the first of a projected trilogy, a rock opera of sorts. The storyline centers around an individual who journeys through life, influenced by the world of Tarot, where each song is associated with a specific card. Lyrics and some interesting artwork is included in the booklet. The special edition even comes with a comic book!
This is certainly something a little different, centered around the dramatic vocals of Seraina Schöpfer. He has a good voice, quite versatile and unique, and generally these tracks feature him often. Musically, the guitar riff reigns supreme, but the band often inject effects and moody atmospheres, especially in song intros. Heavy rock, metal, and alternative are all touched upon and Däumling inserts some pretty good melodies along the way. “Shaddap” is a rocking first track beginning with some atmospheric moodiness followed by a blood curdling scream before the riffs start in earnest. The dramatic and unnerving intro in “Invitation” is pretty cool and in “Fake” the vocals and guitar are a little less in your face and the music has some nice changes of pace. The band turn down the aggressiveness with the somber inflected “Fading Love” featuring wonderful performances by Däumling and Seraina. Definitely one of my favourite tracks.
For something a little outside the edge of conventional metal you may want to give DerHerold a try. Arcanum is a disc that may take a little time to appreciate but after a few listens it started to get under my skin. And friends, that’s a good thing.
