Custard Flux: Einsteinium Delirium

These past few weeks I have been digging into Detroit Michigan’s Custard Flux, led by Gregory Curvey. The band’s previous works were mostly acoustic, but they still rocked out at times and are all excellent in their own right. Their latest album is titled Einsteinium Delirium and this time around the psychedelic master has decided to go full out electric, and I have to say Curvey and his fellow mates have come up with another exceptional release loaded with the band’s fine blend of psychedelic, progressive, and pop rock.

The album’s concept is centered around nuclear weapons/war. The synthetic element Einsteinium (named after Albert Einstein) is an unstable element that can be formed from nuclear explosions. Track titles such as “Fat Man”, Transmutation”, and “Burning In The Sun”, all refer to the nuclear age in one way or another. Though the subject matter couldn’t be more serious, the music is not at all depressing.

The opening track “Peace And Love” begins with psychedelic guitar and dramatic cymbal washes followed by a catchy chorus and excellent drum work. The music is more urgent given the full electric treatment. A super catchy guitar riff gives “Burning In The Sun” a major earworm as the music flows from lighter to heavier motifs. A guitar arpeggio and rich Mellotron mark the beginning of “Kingdom Come”, eventually the music ventures between seamless transitions of soft and heavy. Curvey’s vocals are dreamy and laidback, nice and easy to listen to. The psychedelic “Equinox” has the band rocking with attitude and with “Transmutation”, the psychedelic sounds are more chaotic but no less enjoyable.

Einsteinium Delirium is another excellent album from Custard Flux. A band that has quickly become one of my favourite recent discoveries. Highly recommended!
