Sodom: The Arsonist

German thrash legends Sodom are back with their 17th studio album, and first in five years, The Arsonist. This is one of those bands that simply never disappoints, and The Arsonist is another kick ass platter of extreme trash as only Sodom can deliver.

After the opening instrumental title track, "Battle of Harvest Moon" kicks things into high gear, a classic sounding Sodom styled thrasher, complete with raging riffs and drums, venomous vocals, and a super catchy chorus. Off to the races we go, and a great song! "Trigger Discipline" is up next, and this one rips at Mach 10 speed, reminding me of Slayer from the Reign in Blood album a little bit. Super fast and violent thrash metal, blazing solos, and it's quite catchy and memorable at the chorus. The band then dives into "The Spirits That I Called", a standard Sodom-styled neck snapper, and a good one, love the riffs, love the groove, a brief but killer guitar solo...yeah, another memorable track. "Witchunter" follows, a crushing track, plenty fast, gang vocal on the chorus, and just relentless riffing and drumming, with a snarling vocal from Tom Angelripper, a guy we can always depend on to deliver the goods. The more mid-tempo "Scavenger" follows, showing the band can shift gears when they need to, and this one is almost doomy in spots. Good stuff.

"Gun Without Groom" though brings us back to manic thrash, complete with killer riffs that chug and rip along at a frantic pace, again reminding me of a more extreme Slayer at times. Killer track, and one of my favorites here. "Taphephobia" is also brutal thrash, a non-stop assault of excellent riffs and manic drumming, and Tom's vocals are spot on. Another favorite here. "Sane Insanity" gets my vote for the song with the best title on the album! It's a chunky, fast ripper...somewhat generic thrash, and again reminds me of Slayer (Tom even sounds a little like Araya on the chorus) but, it's Sodom, so of course it's fun. "A.W.T.F." is up next, more snarling thrash, the riffing is so fast and precise...love the intensity here on this one. Tom's vocals are especially venomous throughout. The opening riffs of "Twilight Void" is killer, but the whole song is a pure necksnapper...raging German thrash at its best! "Obliteration of the Aeons" is another mid-paced crusher, love the chugging riff, Tom's gravelly vocal, and the drums are especially punishing. This one changes pace in spots, which adds to its effectiveness. Another killer track, a pure headbanger! Closing out with "Return to God in Parts", it's almost as if they saved the best for last...this is how you close out an album! Wow...blitzkrieg thrash right here, massive riffing, pulverizing drums, Tom's evil vocal...this one doesn't let up, and is easily my favorite song on the album. Total crusher!

Yeah, another excellent Sodom album...a band that has never made a bad album. Get this immediately, without giving it a second thought!
