Sula Bassana: Nostalgia

Sula Bassana, aka Dave Schmidt, is a German multi-instrumentalist specializing in psychedelic and space rock genres, with a heavy helping of Krautrock thrown in for good measure. Schmidt (Electric Moon, ZONE SIX, Liquid Visions, Psychedelic Monsterjam, Südstern 44) was in a number of bands and projects in the ‘80s and’ and ‘90s and released his debut album titled Dreamer in 2002 and has released eighteen overall including his last disc Nostalgia in 2022.

Being an accomplished musician, Schmidt plays a variety of instruments and often plays everything himself, and on Nostalgia this includes guitars, basses, drums, synthesizers, organ, Mellotron, and electric sitar.

The first track “Real Life” features a heavy dose of electric sitar giving off a spacey psychedelic vibe and the whispered vocals further adds to the overall cosmic feel. The rhythms build and near song’s end the riffs are highly distorted. The distant soloing adds another cool effect. “We Will Make It” won me over with its catchy guitar riff and quieter Floyd-like trippiness, slowly building and taking its time eventually exploding with heavily distorted guitar. The title track is laced with Mellotron and is an absolutely beautiful piece. “Wurmloch” starts with spacey effects and synths followed by a pulsating keyboard and drum rhythm. I hear a bit of Hawkwind in this one. The album ends with “Mellotraum” and as the song title suggests the Mellotron is featured extensively creating an intoxicating dreamscape.

Nostalgia is indeed an excellent work from Schmidt. Fans of electronic music rejoice!

A Sulatron Records’ release.
