Enigmatic Sound Machines: Imperfect Silence

Based in Montreal, Canada, Enigmatic Sound Machines features Jeremie Arrobas and Thomas Szirmay who decided to veer their sound down a more Progressive Path. “Imperfect Silence� is the duo’s third release, and they are joined by prog/fusion bassist Hansford Rowe (Gong/Gongzilla) and French guitarist Alain Bellaiche (Heldon/Richard Pinhas). In addition, Arrobas is a founding member of Men Without Hats.

As I listened to the opener “In Perfect Silence� I started to get a Pink Floyd vibe, and the guitar solo sealed the deal. A mellow atmospheric instrumental with a melodic guitar solo and keyboard ambiance. I am not sure if this is a homegrown project, but the production is not quite up to par to my ears. “The Distance Between Here and Now� features subpar vocals and a plodding tempo which makes it seem much longer than its 8+ minutes, it left me bored and uninterested. Unfortunately, as I work my way through the album, the vocals don’t get better, and the band can’t get out of first gear. To be fair, the intent/concept of the music is to convey a tired world of endless confusion, stress, depression, hardship, fear, and ultimately hope for a better future. For me, one listen was enough, I found nothing interesting or engaging, and the plodding pace grows tiresome quickly.
