Garaj Mahal: Rotifer
After 15 years without a release, Chicago-based Fusion quartet Garaj Mahal is back with a stellar release Rotifer. Hearing the dazzling electric keys on the opening “7 Minds” should let everyone know that these guys haven’t lost a step. The music is complex, yet the execution sounds effortless, nothing is forced. Fareed Haque puts his stamp on “Brd” which easily one of my favorite tracks, complimented by the keyboard wizardry of Oz Ezzeldin.
I find myself getting lost in the music, and that is exactly what a good song or album should do! Check out the track “Pairs”, now that is what I call infectious. I honestly can’t stop listening to that song, a repetitive motif that the band grooves on while throwing some tasty jams over the top. “Crisco Rides Again” is a tour de force, a powerful acoustic guitar, more electric keys, this song just continues to build, kudos to bassist Kai Eckherdt and drummer Hassan Hurd for their hypnotic backdrop allowing the lead instruments free reign. Normally, I am not a fan of vocals on Fusion albums, but honestly, the two featuring vocals here (“Some Rules”, “We Are Survivors”) are very well done, I have no complaints.
I can’t say enough good things about this album, it’s upbeat and lifts my spirit, feel good fusion!! The band is out on the road so if they come to your neck of the woods, they are a must see, and make sure Rotifer is added to your collection.
