Black Widows: Euphorbia

The Swiss band Black Widows released their debut album, Euphorbia, earlier this year. It’s not quite industrial, not quite goth, and not quite pop. But it has all three of those elements. And it’s pretty heavy. The lead vocals are provided by Nina Nesnidal, whose aggressive approach works well with the music, which is written and composed by Maggie de Vault, who also provides backing vocals and is the guitarist. The lineup is filled out by Manuel van Zettler (drums), Koala Smoke (piano), and Gregor Szabo (percussion).

This isn’t normally the type of music I enjoy. But the ten tracks comprising about 36 minutes went by quickly with only a few tracks that I didn’t particularly care for. Perhaps I was in the right mood for the music; perhaps it’s simply a set of good genre-mixing tunes. I’m going with the latter.

The album features an appropriately dark, striking cover, and my CD came with liner notes containing some compelling images to accompany the lyrics of each song.

Euphorbia will be playing a number of shows in the Northeast in early August and one in Minneapolis in September. The dates are listed on their Bandcamp site (link below). If you’re in the area of one of the concerts, consider checking them out.
