Discipline: Breadcrumbs

Discipline's Breadcrumbs is a masterful blend of prog sensibilities, showcasing the band's growth into a more refined and mature sound. The title track is a standout, with a tempo and melodic sensibility reminiscent of ELP, but with Fripp-inspired guitars courtesy of Chris Herin, adding an angular beauty to the mix. Herin's guitar work is a highlight, particularly in "Keep the Change", a song that takes on a more American approach to progressive rock with jazzy elements in the drumming and piano. The song's themes of war and veteran experiences are poignant, and the guitar work is sublime.

The album's momentum builds with "When the Night Calls to Day", a song that showcases Matthew Parmenter's Banks-influenced keyboard virtuosity. This track might be the most Discipline-sounding song on the record, with Parmenter's playing perfectly capturing the band's essence and style. The instrumental "Aloft" is a spectacular showcase of the band's jazz-fueled prowess, with Parmenter's mesmerizing violin playing adding an extra layer of depth.

The album's closer, "Aria", is a piano-led emotional song with a Beatlesque quality that's not typically found in Discipline's catalog. However, the song's craftsmanship is undeniable, and it provides a perfect closure to a highly mature record. The band's musicianship has clearly evolved, and Breadcrumbs feels like the work of a group that's found its footing. It's as if they've slipped into a new suit, one that's tailored to their mature artistry, and they're feeling comfortable in it- a safe haven of songcraft that allows them to flourish without sacrificing their artistic edge. The album's cohesion is impressive, with each song flowing seamlessly into the next.

What sets Breadcrumbs apart is its immediacy- it's a record that shines from the first listen, with all its gems on full display. The band's maturity is evident in every aspect of the album, from the songwriting to the performances. With Breadcrumbs, Discipline has created a record that will undoubtedly be regarded as a highlight of their career... cheers!!!
