Light, The: The Light
Here is another new discovery for me. Germany progressive/alternative metal band The Light formed in 2024 and have recently released their self-titled debut album. The three piece veteran unit includes Holger Terhorst (guitar), Alex Scherz (bass), and Nick Antonelli (vocals).
There is a good amount of guitar crunch throughout the album starting with the opening track “Swinging” with its hefty riffs and dynamic vocal arrangement. A catchy start for sure. With “War” the heaviness continues with a slightly more adventurous sound. War-like effects like sirens and moody electronics give off a much darker vibe. The vocals offer a similar feel, more intense and dynamic, continues the feeling of a nightmarish landscape. With “Toxic Dependence” the sound is dark and gloomy, as to be expected given the subject matter, only to break through with soaring vocals in the chorus. It’s these hooks that will bring me back for more. Sometime the vocalist seems to be straining to find the notes but for the most part I dig his voice, German accent and all.
“Fall” is another catchy metal rocker with great riffs and stand out vocals whereas “Train To Nowhere” takes the progressive metal route with its tricky riff progressions. The title track is a real scorcher with more powerful and dynamic riffage while the album ending “You Will Never Know” is more introspective with light and heavy shades. One of the album’s best tracks.
The Light is a highly enjoyable debut, heavy rock and metal fans should eat this up. It will be interesting to hear how the band progresses on their next release.
A Fastball-Records release.
