Giant: Stand and Deliver

Let’s just take a minute to look at the line-up above, shall we? David Huff-Drums-check. Mike Brignardello-Bass-check. Dann Hu…oh. At least Terry Brock will still be handling vocals… double oh.

Line Up:
Kent Hilli-Lead Vocals
Jimmy Westerlund-Lead Guitar
Mike Brignardello-Bass
David Huff-Drums

It’s super easy to take the proverbial out of what is now Giant especially since the original band weren’t exactly a giant success (sorry) although there were certainly a couple of genre classics in the early catalogue. What ultimately matters is whether Stand and Deliver is a worthwhile auditory experience and to be absolutely fair, it certainly is.

From the Who-like opening of "It’s Not Right" to the memorable (God, I’m good) "A Night to Remember "until the end of closer "Pleasure Dome", there’s a vein of quality running through the album which makes the whole thing a worthwhile exercise. "Hold the Night" gets the fists pumping in a throwback kinda way and the whole thing is as niche as it’s possible to be in 2025.

Those who find themselves in the melodic rock/AOR niche zone will find so much to enjoy here and perhaps the greatest praise I can give the album is to say that Dan Huff isn’t really missed at all, such is the prowess of Jimmy Westerlund, who indelibly stamps himself all over the recording. When you get to "I Will Believe", you will believe, oh yes you will. "It Ain't Over Till It's Over" is the kind of power ballad that rock bands used to use in order to win over the mum market and the title track sounds like modern day FM so all-in-all, it’s a bit of a small-scale triumph for the Giant brand.
