Custard Flux: Helium

I was introduced to Detroit’s Custard Flux a few weeks ago and continuing my foray into the band’s unique acoustic/psychedelic blend we bring you their 2018 release titled Helium. The project is led by Gregory Curvey who plays all instruments other than drums and bass. Like the other releases I’ve heard, Curvey’s brand of psychedelic rock and pop is a beautiful thing.

The up-tempo “The Hit Parade” leads off the album with a super catchy guitar riff and Curvey’s undeniable catchy lead vocals. There are moments that call to mind ‘60s sunshine pop but what really stands out is the exceptional work on acoustic guitar. With “Forevermore” the harmonium is well used in creating some delicious psychedelic sounds and on “Empyrean House” the acoustic guitar rhythms, mystical chimes, and background drenched harmonium will take the listener on another journey into the realm of ‘60s inspired psychedelic pop music. The mellow “Tiger” with its imaginative acoustic guitar stylings is another earworm. The way Curvey’s vocals blend with the harmonium is really quite magical. Stellar acoustic and electric guitar and flute can be heard on the Eastern tinged progressive instrumental “The Shire of Gingin” and on the album ending title track, the mellow atmospheric soundscape recalls early ‘70s Pink Floyd. It is a lovely way to end the album.

What can I say? Another enjoyable platter from Custard Flux. Psychedelic music has not sounded this good in an awfully long time!
