Tu-Ner: Tu-Ner For Lovers
Tu-Ner is a project consisting of Pat Mastelotto, Trey Gunn, and Markus Reuter. Thery released their first album titled Contact Information in 2023 and have followed it up with their sophomore effort Tu-Ner For Lovers, released in 2024. Now this review would be way too long if I went into each musician’s resume at length but there is a common thread tying these exceptional artists together and that is King Crimson. Whether directly involved with K.C. or its various ProjKects, their musical ethos has been truly inspired by the legendary band. This leaves us with Tu-Ner For Lovers, a selection of live songs taken from the band’s 2023 U.S.A. Tour.
Going into this album it is important to note these players are exceptional improvisers and that informs the backbone of the individual tracks. And yes, this is some pretty weird stuff but damn if this isn’t downright captivating.
Our journey into madness begins with “The Last Barbie Tango”, weird name I know and is only outmatched by the zaniness found within. Weird effects and disturbing noises and drones sound like they re emanating from an echo chamber. The groove tries to develop amidst the chaos of chopped up guitar and experimental complexity. Weird but wonderful at the same time. Trey Gunn’s edgy Warr guitar highlights the experimental “Six Inches Tall”, and in the trippy “The White Thing” the heavy use of vocoder will transport you to an alternate dimension. Trippy to say the least. Swells of Touch guitar gives “A Nightingale Sang in Our Tornado” a mellower trippiness and the completely exotic and strange “Attack of the Puppet People” highlights all three improvisers, giving this track plenty of staying power.
Released on Trey Gunn’s own 7D Media, Tu-Ner For Lovers should be sought out by anyone remotely interested in all things King Crimson and experimental music in general.
