Here's a new split release from the folks at Apollon Records, featuring two stellar Norwegian acts, Jordsjo and Breidablik. Now, I'm very familiar with the wonderful music of Jordsjo, whose previous releases blending Norwegian folk and vintage progressive rock in the vein of Gentle Giant, Anglagard, Genesis, and Jethro Tull have quite captivated me in recent years, but Breidablik is a new name to me. Kontraster offers up two 20-minute long tracks from each, and each, surprisingly enough, is also titled "Kontraster". Jordsjo's piece contains all the elements I love from this band; the quirky arrangements, loads of flute, organ and other keyboards, booming bass, and awesome electric and acoustic guitar passages. Vocals are in Norwegian and are very well done, totally fitting with the style of music they play. This is a killer track, and takes the listener on a thoughtful journey that never gets boring, and I can really appreciate how the band goes from tranquil folky bits to more rocking prog at the drop of a hat. Well done. The Breidablik piece is more in line with Tangerine Dream's mid '70s output, chock full of synthesizer soundscapes, sequences, lots of ambient atmosphere, and even some cool guitar solos in spots. It's also really well done and adds a fun counterpoint to the style of Jordsjo on the first track. I'd say if you are fan of either band, you'd be well advised to check this one out, as you get a nice sampling of what each has to offer.
