Custard Flux: Echo

The year is 1966 and…oops that’s 2025, my bad. Please forgive me as I have just been time warped to the 1960s while listening to Detroit, Michigan’s Custard Flux, a project led by Gregory Curvey. With a name like Custard Flux you just know this should scream psychedelic and that is exactly what their 2019 album titled Echo does.

What you will notice is this is mostly all acoustic as the band channels their love of ‘60s psychedelic pop music and they do an exceptional job. You can practically smell the incense burn as the opening track “Supernatural” falls into its psychedelic folky groove supplemented with a jangly Beatles-like arrangement with violin somehow reminding me of something George Harrison might have written. The title track is a mostly instrumental affair with its dense arrangement and subtle country leanings but still mostly full on psych. “America” mixes in some slightly heavier acoustic riffs into what is another psychedelic rock gem. Some really nice acoustic playing in this one. The super catchy “Cirque d’Enfant” is drenched in harmonium while the slightly more urgent “Extraordinary Man” is more psych pop ear candy. The rhythmic groove in the bouncy “Pink Indians” makes for another earworm.

This is another one of those discs that came right out of left field as I was completely in the dark regarding Custard Flux. Echo is a charming bit of psychedelic music that will take you back in time and in today’s world that is not such a bad prospect. Recommended!
