Bruteus: Echoes Of Resistance

Here is another new discovery for me. Bruteus is an instrumental power prog trio hailing from Raleigh, North Carolina with three studio albums to their credit thus far. They released their self-titled debut in 2015, followed by Anthem in 2018, and culminating with the recently released Echoes Of Resistance.

Echoes Of Resistance has been another great find. Given there are only three musicians the sound is full, complex, melodic and varied taking influences from ‘70s classic rock, psychedelic rock and experimental music. The melodies and complex arrangements easily held my interest through the disc’s nine tracks beginning with the excellent “Descent”, a complex slice of heavy progressive rock with an addictive main riff and quieter parts that slowly build to unleash the heaviness. I hear the influence of Rush in this one. “The Void” is all slow and mysterious with trippy guitar and percussion, very moody and brooding. The slow developing atmospheric soundscape inundated with spacey guitar has a very psychedelic space rock sound. The groove settles in with the lead guitar smouldering through a tripped out jam. With “Mystic”, an arpeggio chord starts slow but as the song progresses so does the heaviness into a full on progressive psychedelic rock assault. The band often transitions between harder and softer sound palettes, all done with a sophisticated flair.

The ’70s influenced heavy rock of “Rage and Tranquility”, the huge rumbling bass in “The Knight”, the short but mysterious “Desire” (imagine a ship on the ocean shrouded in perpetual mist), and the dark and heavy “Galactic Army” with its relentless burning guitar work are more exciting highlights.

What a nice surprise Echoes Of Resistance has been. For those attracted to heavy ‘70s influenced rock with psychedelic and space rock flavourings, you should really find yourself a copy. Enjoy!
