Blake, Jason: Candles Burn

I had the good fortune of being sent this CD. I was unaware of Jason Blake and his enormous talent and considerable output. Here we have just three songs, with Blake on a semi-hollow Warr guitar joined by Raphael Weinroth-Browne, formerly of Leprous, on cello playing some amazing prog-chamber instrumental music. At least to my ears. I expect that some readers of SoT will find it a bit tedious. But if you like Gentle Giant, you’ll probably like it, at least for the 18 minutes of this EP. Could this work for the length of a full album? Maybe not. But I enjoyed what this duo gave me. And I’m really looking forward to listening to Blake’s electric work with Marco Minnemann, with whom he has worked frequently, including on two releases subsequent to this 2024 effort. In the meantime, I will occupy myself with his instrumental metallic work with the band Aziola Cry. I’m listening to their 2021 album The Ironic Divide right now. If you don’t know about Blake, correct that!
