The Ferrymen: Iron Will

There is nothing bad about this album. There just isn’t anything that can get me super excited about it.

The Ferrymen are a trio of talented and seemingly ubiquitous musicians: Magnus Karlsson on guitar, bass, and keys; Ronnie Romero on vocals; and Mike Terrana on drums. Iron Will is their fourth release and it delivers what the band’s label, Frontiers, promises: “melodic heavy metal.” The problem is, it seems like these guys should be able to do better. It’s not quite paint-by-numbers, but there is a high level of repetition from song to song, each in the four- to five-minute range. After several listens, I can recall only two, “Mother Unholy,” which has a powerful start and a catchy chorus, and “Darkest Storm,” which has sort of a Maiden-like gallop to it. I was never tempted to turn off the album, but I did zone out on occasion only to be drawn back in by a moment of expert playing or really good singing, and there are many.

If you’re on the hunt for a new, solidly done power metal album, The Ferrymen’s Iron Will fits the bill.
