Arizona doom/stoner/sludge/psych outfit Goya return with their fourth album for Blues Funeral Recordings, In the Dawn of November. Known for their pulverizing, fuzz-soaked riffs and doom-laden, psychedelic overtones, Goya have created six new tracks here that are sure to please any fan of the more 'riffy' side of heavy music. The album was produced by Jack Endino, and features the line-up of Jeffrey Owens (vocals, guitar), CJ Sholtis (bass), and Marcus Bryant (drums), with Preston Bryant contributing keyboards.
With the opening title track, fans are transported right into Goya's world of sludgy might, as massive riffing and tortured vocals drive this heavy track, also littered with plenty of manic wah-wah guitar solos. "Cemetery Blues" is more of a groovy and bluesy stoner rock number, but it also drives home the heaviness in a big way. Monstrous fuzz on both the guitar and bass is highlighted on the rumbling "Depressive Episode", while "Sick of Your Shit" slows things down a bit as the band lumbers into a bottom heavy groove...in some ways, this is perhaps the heaviest biker metal you'll hear this year. "I Wanna Be Dead" goes full bore into slow, ponderous, and menacing doom (think Sleep, Electric Wizard, or Acid King), with big fat riffs and bluesy guitar solos. The waves of fuzz on this one are glorious! Easily my favorite song on the album, nice and lengthy too. "Comes With the Fall" closes, a total psychedelic mind-trip with some spacey sounding guitar and bass noises.
In the Dawn of November is highly enjoyable doom music with loads of stoner and psych goodness, and comes highly recommended if you appreciate the more riff-laden side of things. Cool cover art too!
