Legendary sax player Joe Lovano continues his long association with ECM Records on his latest release Homage, a gorgeous collection of new material and some covers featuring continued collaboration with his friends from Poland, the Macin Wasilewsky Tio, who are comprised of Wasilewski (piano), Slawomir Kurkiewicz (double bass), and Michael Miskiewicz (drums). With arrangements that encompass improvisations as well as a more structured approach, the quartet conjures up some mysterious and atmospheric sounds on "Love in the Garden", long-form interplay on the excellent "Golden Horn", which features a great excursion from Lovano, the quirky improv of "Homage", and the wild jaunt that is "This Side-Catville". The latter includes a wealth of wonderful piano from Wasilewski, and during the second half of the track, all four players really go off into some uncharted waters that will leave you breathless.
As we've come to expect with any ECM release, expect high quality from Homage, which was produced by label owner Manfred Eicher, and sounds fantastic. Expert playing from all involved, and considering his track record, Lovano knocks it out of the park once again.
