Cheat The Prophet: Redemption

Cheat The Prophet's debut album Redemption is a testament to the band's vast experience and progressive rock pedigree. Formed by members of Ars Nova and Nepenthe, this New Jersey-based trio brings a unique blend of sounds to the table, reminiscent of bands like Hats Off Gentlemen, Drifting Sun, Myth Of Logic, and Infringement, with nuances of Phish and an alternative-metallic approach in their heaviest moments.

The album's melodies are catchy, if not necessarily sticky, with the guitars and keyboards being the highlight of the band's sound. While Matt Mizenko's vocal style may not be everyone's cup of tea, the intricate interchanges between acoustic guitars and pianos are undeniably captivating.

The album kicks off with the solid opener "Chaos", featuring good instrumentation and a nice chorus. "Bad Bitch" stands out for its alternative/grunge sound, seamlessly blended with the band's progressive rock influences. "Marvelous World (Losing Season)" is a beautiful song, led by acoustic instruments that intertwine with vocal melodies, reaching its apex when the electric side of the band takes over.

The instrumental track "Paper White" showcases the band's classic influences, with pastoral acoustic guitars evoking memories of Genesis and Jethro Tull. However, it's the epic "Whisper" that truly represents the essence of Neo Prog, with its moody, progressive sound, complex composition, and memorable melodies. The keyboards on this track are particularly noteworthy, with detailed fills and a well-crafted arrangement.

Overall, Redemption is a solid output that, while not necessarily a classic, has its memorable moments and showcases the band's experience and skill. With Jamie Boruch's drums, Todd Mizenko's guitars, and Matt Mizenko's vocals and keyboards, Cheat The Prophet has delivered an album that will resonate with fans of progressive rock and those looking for something new and exciting. Cheers!
