Perfect Plan: Heart of a Lion

If you like melodic, somewhat pompy rock, this is an album worth checking out. Heart of a Lion definitely takes you back to the mid-to-late-1980s, when soaring vocals, big keys, and almost synthy guitars ruled the airwaves.

Perfect Plan is a five-piece Swedish act comprised of Kent Hilli on vocals, Leif Ehlin on keyboards, Rolf Nordström on guitars, Mats Byström on bass, and Fredrik Forsberg on drums. At times, I got a Journey vibe from them on this, their fourth album, while at others I was reminded of Whitesnake, especially on tracks like “Danger on the Loose� and “One Touch.� Hilli has that sort of range and the ability to change the timbre of his voice.

The tracks are memorable, mostly for the good. Sometimes, though, they can get stuck in your head in a slightly annoying way. The chorus of “We Are Heroes,� for instance, is too repetitive and overblown, pushing the somewhat syrupy message of the song over the top, for my ears. All in all, though, I enjoyed the album, and it took me back to a time when life seemed a lot simpler. And that’s never a bad thing.
