Pymlico: Core

Norway has been treating us to some great music lately with the likes of Soft Ffog and Krokofant to name a few. Pymlico is a 7 piece instrumental band back with their Fifth album Core following up 2022’s Supermassive. The band is a cross of Prog Rock influences with a jazzy undercurrent. “Ellipses” ends strong with a good riff, vibes and guitar solo. For me, I just wish the entire song was as strong as its closing section. “Don’t Do That” is a song that should rock harder than just during the guitar solos. On a few tracks there are questionable keyboard/synth synth sounds that takes the wind out the sails. Finally, “Fair Play” delivers the goods, but you still have to wade through to the midway point before things kick in. “221B” shows what Pymlico can do, mellow and atmospheric to start, the song builds and finally lifts off with some amazing guitar and saxophone soloing.

Ultimately, the music comes off a bit too polished, a little rawness would add some needed kick. There are fiery sections and great musicianship like during the solo during “Captain Teebs”. I went back and read my review of Supermassive and for me, not much has changed. Core sounds like a band that is holding something back to my ears; just let it rip next time.
