Causa Sui: Loppen 2024

Recorded live in Copenhagen in 2024, this is my first experience with Danish quartet Causa Sui. As I explore the jam scene, I keep expanding my boundaries of what that term/genre represents, and Causa Sui certainly fits. I love the heavy opener “Sorcerer’s Discipline�, 8+ minutes of heavy guitar, swirling keys and a pounding rhythm section. “Red Sun in June� gives off a Blind Melon “No Rain� vibe; I swear I hear the guitar solo lick in here. The song is stuck in that mid-tempo groove that could use another gear. To no one’s surprise, I like bands with a more complex approach overall. That said, it’s still enjoyable to hear guitarist Jonas Munk jamming over the top. The Wah-wah drenched “Boozehound� is the shortest track, and stays mostly locked giving the music a hypnotic quality. The heavy guitar and fuzz bass give “The Spot� a darker tone which transitions to a spacier feel when the electric keys kick in. The song loses steam towards the end unfortunately.

The epic 22+ minutes “Visions of a New Horizon� finds the band exploring more sounds and atmosphere rather than soloing. Beyond the halfway point the band begins grinding and kicking the song into overdrive offering a bit more punch. I like the energy of the band, and I’m sure they are a band that needs to be witnessed live.

I just sat back and let the long extended jams wash over me, that’s what this music is all about. Although a bit more variation and exploration would add to the experience, Causa Sui definitely succeeds in giving the audience that hypnotic jam experience.
