Nankai TRIO: Antarctica
Within the first minute I knew we had a winner with NanKAI Trio and their debut release Antarctica. "Battle on Southern Sea" is chock full of ripping guitar courtesy of Shoya Kitagawa (Dezolve). The title track "Antarctica" shifts gears with a clean guitar tone, as Senri Kawaguchi (Kiyo-Sen) propels the music with her amazing drumming, and the bass work of Masatoshi Mizuno (Fragile) shines on the more traditional sounding "Kisame". Variety, composition, melody and flawless technique on display throughout. The band never loses their intensity throughout the eight tracks, check out the fiery riffing and interplay on "Nankai Do". "Five Senses" is one of the tracks I can’t get out of my head, and Kitagawa is at the top of his game here, I've been playing this one over and over. This band just dazzles, and Kitagawa is climbing on my list of favorite players, his tone and style are right in my wheelhouse.
Capturing this kind of energy on a studio recording is rare, let's just say mission accomplished. It's rare that an album holds up from start to finish, so, let's just say that Antarctica is in rarefied air, easily a top release for 2025.
