Workman, Lyle: Fight For Freedom
Lyle Workman’s 2021 release Uncommon Measures was a 5-star release for me, an amazing album. His latest is an EP (clocking in around 30 minutes) and is a mixed bag of rocking tunes that share time with his more cinematic work. The opening “Truth and Beauty in the Deep Dark Night” is the album's best track with great guitar work and a complex Zappaesque arrangement. He casts a wide net with his music; you get the country/surf-flavored “Faraway Land” to the atmospheric vocalizations of “Long Journey Home” which transforms midstream to a more electronic sound. The 7 tracks are all within the 3-5 minute range, so this is an album you can listen to and absorb quickly. “Viral Sensation” is a lively energetic piece of music that brings to mind Peter Gabriel’s “Kiss of Life”. The quirky and intricate lead melody lines definitely capture my ear, a good mix of guitar and synth work.
You get a good feel for all the various influences in Workman’s music. Even though I wish there were more guitar heroics to be found, it’s a very enjoyable listen from an artist who should be more appreciated.
