Robots Of The Ancient World: 3737

A couple years back I was introduced to Oregon based Robots Of The Ancient World and their sophomore album Mystic Goddess. I was blown away by the band’s blend of trippy psychedelic and distorted sounds. I have finally gotten around to their third effort, intriguingly titled 3737 and the question is how does it stack up against such a fine album as Mystic Goddess? The answer is it holds its own quite well, and that folks is no mean feat.

As in the last record, the band pays homage to the all mighty guitar riff, with huge amounts of distortion and fuzz, massive grooves, and full throated lead vocals providing some great melodies. The nice and tidy near forty minute album is spread out through six tracks, and rest assured this band can explode with instrumental fireworks that just might peel the paint off your walls.

“Hindu Kush” begins with massive rumbling of distortion and fuzz, morphing into a relentless mid-tempo guitar riff and leading into a catchy chorus with earworm vocals, both lead and backing. He can really belt it out when he needs to, his voice robust and on point. The riffs continue with some ripping lead work emerging from the distorted rhythms. Sparse chords make for a trippy intro on “Creature”, the cool spacey effects and echoes providing a starting point for the heaviness to burst forth, eventually gaining tempo with everything drenched in fuzz. The band excels at creating hypnotic sound palettes that had me hooked almost immediately. “Holy Ghost” features a fantastic chugging riff with plenty of heft and with “Moustache”, psychedelic effects and guitar create a cosmic-like soundscape before the fully realized riffs take hold. The drumming adds a little complexity with some interesting fills. The short and atmospheric “Apollo” features a mellow clean guitar before the album ending ten minute epic “Silver Cloud” brings the album to a conclusion. A hypnotic slow burning intensity combined with massive exploding riffs will keep any listener at rapt attention. An absolutely stunning ending to what is an excellent album.

This is for anyone even remotely interested in heavy music. It is safe to say, any and all metal collections need this disc!
