Sometimes, the media information accompanying a record says it all for us. In the case of Between Order & Chaos, the fourth album from Dr. Elephant’s Revolution, here's the line that does the trick: “This masterpiece of what-the-fuckness is a must for everyone who’s craving for something else than the usual.”
“Masterpiece” might be a stretch, but the rest is spot-on. I all but guarantee you won’t hear anything else this week like this mishmash of gothic-tinged industrialized alt-metal punctuated by in-and-out pop flourishes. The album cover features what appears to be the pirate ship that adorned the front of 2020’s On Our Own stuck on top of sand in an hourglass. It’s a fitting image, as Between Order & Chaos sounds like a continuation of that album, along with some Rob Zombie shards in a song like “Silly Dream.” Of course, there’s also the obligatory titled “Elephant in the Room,” a relentless and dense track during which the listener is urged to "Get your head out of your ass/Get off your high horse/Stop fooling around/And pull yourself together."
All of this is the product of two Swedish musicians: Maggie de Vault on guitars, percussion and “orchestra,” and Fred Hubert on drums and percussion. Both of them rotate singing, which (after about the album’s halfway point) made me realize Dr. Elephant’s Revolution might just be an epic and extremely twisted take on a band like Roxette. (!)
